Daily disposable contact lenses offer what no other type of contact lenses can provide: convenient, trouble-free, comfortable vision every day. However, an expert has warned, patients need to follow one simple rule, which requires them to remove and throw away their lenses at the end of the day.
Recently, a woman from Norwich named Katie Richardson, has disregarded this rule and went to bed without taking out her contact lenses. Next morning, she woke up with severe infection, making it very difficult to open one of her eyes. At first, she thought it was ordinary conjunctivitis, but her practitioner quickly discovered that the problem was much more serious. Richardson was referred to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, where her treatment began. For several weeks, she had to wear an eye patch and take numerous drops to get rid of her fungal keratitis.
According to Dr Parwez Hossain (University of Southampton), who commented on the case, patients really need to treat lens wear instructions seriously and remove daily disposable contact lenses before going to sleep, because the consequences of non-compliance may be dramatic.
