According to Dr Loretta B. Szczotka-Flynn, writing for Contact Lenses Today, daily disposable contact lenses will soon gain as much popularity in the US as in other parts of the world. This is because, the expert emphasises in her latest article, they are the best and the easiest way to avoid most contact lens-related complications.
As Dr Szczotka-Flynn points out, contact lens manufacturers launch new versions of their daily contacts more and more often, and introduce completely new materials and designs (Bausch + Lomb’s Biotrue ONEday lenses are the most recent example here). This gives patients an increasingly wide choice, making it easier for them to make the decision to switch from their current contacts to daily disposable ones.
Though some studies noted increased rates of complications in the users of daily contact lenses, these results – the expert stresses – do not deny the advantages of such lenses, because the complications were associated with patient non-compliance and not the characteristics of the lenses themselves. These, Dr Szczotka-Flynn writes, should lead to a decrease in the number of infections among contact lens users. Provided, of course, they follow their eye care practitioners’ instructions.
