A group scientists carried out a study regarding increasing contact lenses users’ compliance with instructions provided by eye care professionals by improving their understanding of the consequences of failing to follow instructions and the benefits of following them.
The participants of the study were given explanations clarifying the basis (both practical and scientific) for most of the instructions that patients receive when they are fitted with contact lenses in order to extend their education concerning the matter. The explanations were also prepared in a simpler version so that children and adults with some reading disabilities could understand them.
The conclusion that the researchers reached is that it is possible that patients’ non-compliance often results from lack of understanding of its consequences and lack of knowledge regarding the basis for the instructions. In addition, some patients assume that the instructions are unimportant, because symptoms resulting from non-compliance usually occur after some time.
The researchers are confident that explanations including reasons for the instructions given by eye care practitioners can markedly improve patient compliance.
