The American Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning addressed to all Twilight fans related to the use of non-regulated coloured contact lenses.
According to the warning, wearing such contact lenses can lead to severe eye infections and even permanent blindness.
The FDA issued the warning via Twitter, as a way to reach all Twilight fans who are planning to take part in the official convention, which will take place in San Antonio next month. The participants of such conventions often wear cosmetic contact lenses, some of which are purchased from unlicensed online shops, to look like their favourite characters (in the case of Twilight, they are usually vampires).
The San Antonio convention will feature a competition for fans attending the event in appropriate costumes, the best of which will be awarded attractive prizes.
The message sent by the FDA also included a link to an official document providing details regarding risks associated with wearing cosmetic contact lenses. The agency has issued a number of similar warnings, but the number of contact lens complications resulting from the use of illegally sold lenses is still rising.
