Problems resulting from the economic crisis affect British people’s attitude towards eye care, the latest research suggests.
The effects of the recession on patients’ behaviour are quite worrying. According to the afore-mentioned research, almost twenty per cent of people visit their eye care practitioners less frequently than before. This is a serious reason for concern, because it may mean their prescriptions for contact lenses or glasses are out-of-date and they are wearing inappropriate ones.
What is more, many contact lens users wear lenses for far too long, significantly increasing the risk of serious complications, including infections and corneal injuries. Eye care experts warn that contact lens materials maintain their properties for a limited period of time (in the case of soft contacts, usually for two weeks or a month), after which safety, comfort and sharp vision cannot be guaranteed.
The author of the study said that people were trying to save on expenses related to all aspects of their lives, from socialising to health, which occurs during every economic crisis.
