Bi-weekly and monthly contact lenses, in contrast to daily disposable ones, need to be properly maintained, which mostly involves cleaning them with the use of a solution. This, according to instructions provided by eye care practitioners and contact lens manufacturers, should be done every single day.
There are a wide variety of effective lens care solutions on the market, but recent research – sponsored by the manufacturer of BioTrue contact lens solution – has revealed that as many as 20 percent of contact lens wearers have tried home-made preparations, some of which are very dangerous to the eye, instead of real contact lens solutions.
The most shocking alternatives to lens care solutions found by the research were beer (which contains alcohol and could cause permanent damage to the cornea) and baby oil (which can cause eye irritation and severely blurred vision).
A surprising number of people used saliva as a lens care solution substitute, which is particularly risky, as there are from 500 to 1,000 different kinds of bacteria in the average mouth.
