Expert Stresses Benefits of Fitting Younger Children with Contact Lenses

Fitting young children with contact lenses has been a little controversial, but it is becoming more and more common. Moreover, the trend brings children considerable benefits, contact lens expert Mary Lou French argues.

According to the expert, fitting younger children used to be challenging, but – due to the introduction of advanced materials (especially silicone hydrogel ones) and designs – it is quite straightforward now. There are no problems with irritation or discomfort and there is no need to increase wearing time gradually.

As Dr French points out, wearing glasses is difficult for most children, because they change the way they see the world around them. In addition, they limit children’s physical activity and their ability to play sports. Replacing glasses with contact lenses, the expert believes, usually has a positive impact on their development in the long term. This was proved by the ACHIEVE study, which showed how contact lenses can improve a child’s self-confidence, self-esteem, perception and, consequently, such things as academic achievement and quality of life.
