In spite of their numerous advantages (convenience, safety, comfort and many others), daily disposable contact lenses remain relatively unpopular in North America.
According to research data gathered by Contact Lens Spectrum and Contact Lenses Today, North American countries are far behind other markets with respect to how many contact lens users decide to wear daily contact lenses instead of biweekly or monthly ones.
An expert writing for Contact Lenses Today, Dr Kelly Nichols, believes that this is because some eye care professionals and patients consider using a new pair of contact lenses every day wasteful and too expensive. However, in Dr Nichols’s opinion, daily contact lenses are a great option, for instance, for those who suffer from contact lens related dry eye, which is often overlooked. The reason for this state of affairs is, the expert argues, that there has not been a large-scale clinical trial assessing the influence of daily lenses on patients with contact lens related dry eye carried out.
Such a trial, Dr Nichols concludes, should be conducted soon, as the benefits of daily contacts need to be confirmed.
