A recently published report warns that illegal novelty contact lenses are still sold in numerous places across the state of Ohio, USA.
Novelty contact lenses, which are coloured contact lenses designed to make their users’ eyes resemble strange creatures and characters from various fantasy/horror/science fiction films, are still often sold without prescription in different shops although such practices have been illegal in the United States for over five years.
According to Dayton Daily News, novelty lenses – especially popular in the Halloween season – are still available at petrol stations, beauty salons and costume shops. What is more, Ohio officials state that the number of shops ordered to stop offering such contact lenses was higher last year, and it is likely to increase this year as well.
In 2005, the United States Food and Drug Administration decided that all kinds of contact lenses, irrespective of whether they correct vision or not, are medical devices and therefore cannot be purchased without a doctor’s prescription.
