Millions of people around the world celebrated World Sight Day, one of the biggest events aiming at raising the awareness of problems regarding eye diseases and vision care.
Every year, the event is celebrated on the second Thursday in October and its main message is that eyesight is of utmost importance and everybody should take care of it accordingly, which, above all, involves frequent eye check-ups (this applies especially to patients wearing contact lenses, who need to keep their prescriptions up-to-date).
Moreover, World Sight Day is supposed to spread information about the situation in developing countries, where there are massive problems regarding both availability and effectiveness of vision care.
The importance of events such as World Sight Day is stressed by the fact that approximately 80% of all cases of visual impairment result from conditions that are easy to cure, treat or prevent. What is more, 9 out of 10 cases of blindness occur in poor countries.
According to the organisers of the event, World Sight Day 2011 had no global theme in order to help participants from different parts of the world to focus on issues that are the most important in a given region or area.
