Researchers are constantly working on ways to improve contact lenses and are incorporating new features in them. Consequently, Lisa Bendall, a journalist writing for Best Health, decided to describe the three most interesting, in her opinion, new developments in the field.
The first one is a contact lens capable of administering medicines straight to the eye, developed by scientists working at Children’s Hospital Boston. This invention is very useful in the treatment of many diseases, such as glaucoma. Another innovation related to contact lenses that Bendall describes is a contact lens “washing machine”, which removes protein deposits from contact lenses. The device uses high-frequency sound waves and is already available for purchase in some countries. In contrast, the third innovation mentioned by Bendall – contact lenses with embedded electronics – is still being developed. However, when these lenses are ready, they will revolutionise the entertainment industry.
The pace of progress regarding contact lenses has been amazing, so it is difficult to say what researchers will come up with next. One thing, however, is certain: new materials and designs will make lenses even safer and more comfortable.
