Because of the pressure from the American Food and Drug Administration, CooperVision has issued a new announcement related to the recall of Avaira Toric contact lenses. In addition, the company has admitted that some customers who wore the recalled lenses complained about severe pain.
CooperVision launched Avaira Toric contact lenses in April 2010. In August 2011, the company started to recall selected lots of the lenses due to the presence of a residue; the action affected a total of 8 million lenses worldwide.
When the recall was initiated, CooperVision stated that the problem was discovered because some customers suffered from hazy vision, but in fact there were reports of eye injuries, even torn corneas. The FDA received 15 such complaints.
In view of the seriousness of the situation, the FDA demanded that CooperVision issue another statement warning consumers against the lenses, which the company has done. However, FDA representatives stated that the agency is still analysing CooperVision’s actions in this case.
