Researchers from the University of Washington have managed to implant semitransparent blue and red LED lights in contact lenses. This means that they are closer than ever to developing contact lenses capable of displaying images and videos.
Now, the scientists are working on greed LEDs, which will – when ready – allow them to produce full colour displays.
The ultimate goal is to develop contact lenses that could replace TV screens or smart phones. According to Babak Parvis, who is a lead researcher involved in the project, it will not be necessary to shift the focus in order to see the picture created by lenses clearly, as it would simply appear in front of the user. Moreover, the user’s field of vision will be completely normal when the display is switched off.
The research keeps moving forward, but the scientists are not sure when contact lenses with built-in displays will be available for purchase.
