Contact Lens Expert Recommends ‘Rub and Rinse’ Cleaning Method

Commenting on the results of the latest research, a contact lenses expert stated that contact lens users should use the ‘rub and rinse’ cleaning method irrespective of the brand of their lenses or lens care solution.

Dr Ronald K. Watanabe, who writes for Contact Lenses Today, cites the result of a study which compared the effectiveness of three cleaning methods (no rub, no rinse; rinse only; rub and rinse) used in combination with three lens care solutions and contact lens materials. The expert was not surprised that the rub and rinse technique turned out to be the most effective regardless of the solution and material.

In Dr Watanabe’s opinion, the rub and rinse method should be used by all patients, which includes those who use a lens care solution that is marketed as a ‘no-rub’ one, in order to achieve the highest level of disinfection. In addition, though some contact lenses can be sufficiently cleaned without rubbing and rinsing, there is no way of knowing which ones they are.
