Following the publication (in the previous issue of Optometry and Vision Science) of a study suggesting that ‘rub and rinse’ method of cleaning contact lenses brings the best results, reusable contact lens users have been warned by eye care professionals to follow the recommended maintenance regimens.
Experts stressed the effectiveness of the rub and rinse technique, stating that it should be used while taking care of two-weekly and monthly contact lenses. In addition, irrespective of the type of lens worn, all contact lens users are advised to wash their hands thoroughly before touching lenses.
Moreover, contact lens wearers are urged not to store lenses in water and not to use rewetting eye drops or saline solutions to disinfect lenses, as they should be rinsed with fresh lens care solution and allowed to air dry. As far as lens cases are concerned, eye care professionals emphasise the need to replace them every three months and always use fresh solution in order to maintain proper hygiene.
