Bausch + Lomb (a global manufacturer of contact lenses and related products) has announced the expansion of its voluntary recall of Murocel Methylcellulose Lubricant Ophthalmic Solution, which is sold in the US only. After the recall, the solution will be discontinued altogether.
The company decided to stop producing Murocel, because it manufacturers other solutions that treat the same symptoms as Murocel (burning and irritation caused by dry eye). This over-the-counter solution has been available in the US for over ten years.
The cause of the recall was that six lots of the product were found, after routine stability tests, to be out of specification with respect to preservative efficacy. Fortunately, no adverse events associated with the problem have been reported and the company states it is carrying out the recall to make sure its customers are not at any risk.
American shops and eye care professionals were informed of the recall and Bausch + Lomb is reimbursing patients for the products they have bought and returned.
