Experts Urge to Wear Sunglasses in Addition to UV Blocking Contact Lenses

UV blocking contact lenses are more and more effective (some of them can block up to 99% of the harmful rays), but experts still recommend wearing them in combination with good sunglasses.

According to Dr Susan Blakeney of the College of Optometrists, many British people, though they make sure their skin is protected with sunscreen, neglect their eyes and expose them to sun damage. In her opinion, protecting the eyes is as important as protecting the skin.

Unfortunately, a number of people view sunglasses only as a fashion item, and they either disregard their optical characteristics (focusing on their design), or do not wear any at all.

When people buy sunglasses, Dr Blakeney added, they should make sure that they are of high quality and have a strong UV filter. This is especially important when children are concerned, as studies have confirmed that as much as 80% of a person’s exposure to UV rays occurs before they turn 18.
