RegeneRX Biopharmaceuticals has announced some good news for contact lens users suffering from dry eye and those who would like to wear contact lenses but cannot due to the condition: the company has begun patient enrolment in the phase 2 clinical trial of its newest, dry eye-relieving eye drops (currently referred to as RGN-259). The enrolment is to be completed by the end of August, and the last patient is expected to finish the study in the second half of September.
According to David Crockford, the company’s vice president for clinical and regulatory affairs, RegeneRX Biopharmaceuticals is pleased that patient enrolment is proceeding on schedule. The company looks forward to completing the trial and analysing the data resulting from it as quickly as possible, he added.
Preliminary trials have shown that RGN-259 reduces the defects on the surface of the eye that are caused by dry eye syndrome. During one experiment the new eye drops were even more effective than Restasis™, which is the only drug approved by the US FDA for the treatment of dry eye syndrome.
