GOC Announces Clamp-Down on Illegal Sale of Contact Lenses

It has been announced that the General Optical Council (GOC) is increasing its activity aimed at stopping the illegal sale of contact lenses to protect consumers from the harmful consequences of wearing unsafe products.

The announcement was made at the organisation’s 195th meeting held at the GOC’s headquarters in Harley Street, London. It stated that, since the safety of British contact lens users is of utmost importance, the GOC will try to increase the number of inspections so that the sellers of illegal contact lenses end their practices.

Since the expansion of GOC’s powers of investigation, there have been as many as 122 reported referrals regarding illegal sales of contact lenses, and 12 retailers have already been made to stop selling zero-powered (plano) contact lenses.

According to Samantha Peters, who is the chief executive of the GOC, the number of reports that the organisation has received this year shows how much it has done to raise awareness of the problem. In addition, Peters stated that the GOC had achieved better efficiency, resulting in a reduction in the 2011/12 retention fee.
