The latest production of the Phantom of the Opera uses contact lenses to make the musical’s characters more convincing.
According to Media Update, the new production will be shown at Artscape (Cape Town) on 22nd of November as well as at Teatro at Montecasino starting from 31st January 2012.
The costumes, apart from the traditional wigs, include contact lenses (a white and a clouded one). The production designer working on the musical, Maria Bjornson, stated that her main goal was to make the characters appear as convincing as possible, which was not an easy task.
The scene of the unmasking of the Phantom was particularly challenging, Bjornson revealed. Her team had to find a way to make it effective from all points in any large musical theatre.
The production is directed by Harold Prince and will be performed by an excellent South African cast. The musical is about a brilliant, disfigured musician who is known only as ‘The Phantom’ and haunts the Paris Opera House.
