Trading standards officials have issued a warning stating that wearing cosmetic contact lenses illegally sold in East Yorkshire is dangerous to eyesight and that contact lenses could only be sold by qualified opticians, optometrists or doctors.
According to trading standards officers, cosmetic contact lenses were illegally sold at some outlets (hairdressers, beauticians, markets) in the East Riding. Wearing such lenses could lead to serious complications including eye infections and corneal ulcers.
A spokesman for the East Riding of Yorkshire Council said that those infections and ulcers could later cause permanent eye damage, even blindness.
At the moment, trading standards officers are instructing the owners of the outlets illegally selling cosmetic lenses to stop this practice. If they do not comply, the owners will be referred to the General Optical Council, which can take further enforcement action.
The cabinet portfolio holder for rural issues and cultural services at East Riding Council, Jane Evison, urged contact lens wearers to purchase them only from professionals and to follow their instructions so as to avoid eye complications.
