The latest developments regarding contact lenses and related products made it necessary to revise the current ISO (International Organization for Standardization) standard with respect to the sale and use of such products – ISO 14534:2011, Ophthalmic Optics - Contact Lenses and Contact Lens Care Products – Fundamental Requirements.
The newest edition of the contact lens standard is the third one the ISO has issued. It contains specifications concerning safety and performance characteristics that contact lenses and related products are required to meet. In addition, it includes numerous requirements regarding contact lens design, materials, manufacturing, packaging (shelf-life, labelling, discard dates, etc.).
ISO is the largest standards developing organisation in the world. It has operated for over 50 years and has published more than 18 500 international standards. The purpose of ISO standards is to make sure that products and services have desirable characteristics, including quality, safety and reliability. Moreover, they protect consumers of goods and services and facilitate international trade.
