The negative effects of UV rays on eyes (damage to corneal cells, cataract, macular degeneration and damage to retinal tissues, which may ultimately lead to permanent blindness) are quite well known, but many people still fail to protect their eyes appropriately. Consequently, eye care specialists issue warnings concerning the problem.
Clifford Lee, an expert optometrist, has recently pointed to the fact that even if somebody wears contact lenses with UV protection it may not be enough to protect they eyes completely. In such cases, Lee suggests, it is best to combine contact lenses with sunglasses.
The extra protection is useful although the newest contact lenses can now block up to 96% of UVA and all of UVB rays. This is because contact lenses do not cover the whites of the eyes, which are also susceptible to sun damage.
Apart from UV blocking contact lenses and sunglasses, experts also recommend wearing wide-brimmed hats.
