Coloured contact lenses have been used to modify a person’s appearance (or to shock others) for many years and, thanks to the advanced technology of their production, they are safe and comfortable. However, a new trend connected with changing the appearance of one’s eyes has emerged recently: eye tattoos and piercing.
Eye tattoos use a technique similar to the one used in normal tattoos. Ink is injected under the top layer of the eye, changing the colour of the white of the eye. The procedure was developed to cover some ocular defects (corneal scarring, leucoma) and not for decorative purposes.
Another risky way of decorating one’s eye is piercing, which consists in placing a little piece of jewellery (about 3.5 mm) in the conjunctiva. The procedure is quite short, it takes less than a quarter of an hour. Those who wish to have their eyes pierced can choose from a wide variety of ornaments, including hearts and half-moons covered with glitter, four-leaf clovers, stars and musical notes.
According to eye care experts, both cosmetic procedures are extremely dangerous and people who want to change the look of their eyes should opt for old-fashioned coloured contact lenses instead.
