Dr Susan Gromacki, in her latest article published in Review of Optometry, deals with the problem of training contact lens users by eye care professionals. In her opinion, such training – in view of the abundance of different types of contact lenses – is essential for successful contact lens wear.
First of all, eye care practitioners need to evaluate the contact lens fit to see if a given lens is good for a particular patient. During the next visit, the doctor checks how well the patient sees wearing contact lenses. However, most of the visit consists in teaching the patient to insert and remove his or her lenses. Dr Gromacki stresses the importance of this element and argues that if there is no time to do it properly, the visit should be rescheduled.
The next important step is providing instruction on how to handle contact lenses (checking whether they are inside-out, cleaning them, using appropriate lens care solutions) and when to replace them with a new set.
If these steps are followed and appropriate care is taken, Dr Gromacki concludes, the patient should be able to wear his or her contact lenses problem-free for a long time.
