Most women who use contact lenses wear makeup, so it is extremely important to know how it affects lens safety.
Scientists from the Kinki University in Osaka, Japan, decided to examine the issue in detail. As a result, they discovered that contact lens wearers should take special care if they use oil-based makeup and cleansers. Otherwise, they risk serious complications, especially eye infections. In addition, the researchers also emphasise that women, like all contact lens users, should strictly follow the instructions that lens manufacturers put on their products’ labels.
Junko Tsukiyama, who works at the Department of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medicine at Kinki University, believes that the reason for oil-based cosmetics’ negative impact on contact lenses is the fact that such cosmetics are easily absorbed by silicone hydrogel contact lenses which have not been treated with plasma. This, Tsukiyama adds, leads to their deformation. Only lenses treated with plasma are resistant to oil-based cosmetics and do not get deformed.
