Several eye care organisations have recently issued warnings concerning the problem of inappropriate protection against UV rays. Now, an expert has pointed to the fact that though many contact lenses are advertised as “UV blocking”, the actual levels of protection vary significantly.
Because of that, Dr Stephen Cohen, a former president of the Arizona Optometric Association, stated that contact lens users should carefully consider which contact lenses offer them the most. He also emphasised the importance of UV protection in general and reminded that contact lenses and sunglasses may not be enough, especially with respect to individuals who live in places where the climate is sunny. In such regions, wide-brimmed hats (or other, similar types of headwear) are strongly recommended.
According to Dr Nichol’s article in Contact Lens Spectrum, ACUVUE® OASYS™, ACUVUE® ADVANCE™ and ACUVUE® ADVANCE™ for ASTIGMATISM offer the highest level of protection against the harmful UV rays.
