Experts often warn about the consequences of failing to adhere to recommendations issued by contact lenses manufacturers with respect to the proper hygiene and lens replacement. However, the issue of regular eye exams (which should be carried out at least twice a year) is not as strongly emphasised.
According to Keith Tempany, who is an independent eye care specialist specialising in contact lenses, such biannual eye examinations are of extreme importance, because they allow practitioners to find out whether there have been any changes in the patient’s refractive error requiring adjusting his or her prescription.
In addition, Tempany points out that those check-ups are essential in contact lens users because they help to reveal all the possible complications associated with wearing contact lenses. These complications (conjunctivitis, eye infections, damage to the surface of the eye, etc.) need to be treated as soon as possible, so that they do not lead to any permanent damage.
