Many patients consider LASIK surgery (an eye operation during which doctors remove the patient’s refractive error with the use of a special laser) as an alternative to contact lenses. However, it is not known whether LASIK surgery actually provides patients with increased satisfaction, which is why an American research foundation has decided to carry out a study dealing with the issue.
The Cornea Research Foundation of America, established in 1988 to help patients to improve and preserve their eyesight, plans to compare the levels of satisfaction reported by individuals wearing contact lenses and patients who have undergone LASIK surgery. The aspects that the scientists intend to include in their comparison are: safety, visual satisfaction, complaints concerning visual acuity, quality of life and others.
According to Dr Michael Gordon and Dr Jack L. Weiss working at the Gordon & Weiss Vision Institute, which participates in the study, the research project should bring a lot of valuable information with respect to these two popular means of vision correction.
