Novartis has just announced the completion of its merger with Alcon. The merger was approved by Alcon and Novartis shareholders and entered into the commercial registry. This way Alcon has become the second largest division of Novartis, adding to the company’s eye care product portfolio and expertise. The headquarters of the division will be located in Fort Worth, Texas.
After the changes applied to Alcon’s structure because of the merger, the organisation’s businesses will operate as follows: the surgical unit will still supply equipment, instruments, single-use products and intraocular lenses used in surgical procedures dealing with a variety of eye conditions (cataracts, vitreoretinal diseases, glaucoma and refractive errors). The pharmaceutical unit will combine the pharmaceuticals developed by Alcon with certain products manufactured by Novartis Ophthalmics; in addition, this unit will supervise the line of over-the-counter brands of artificial tears and ocular vitamins. Finally, the vision care unit will combine the brands of contact lenses produced by CIBA VISION (Air Optix Night & Day, Focus Dailies All Day Comfort, Freshlook ColorBlends and others) with contact lens solutions provided by Alcon.
