New Wetting Solution for Silicone Hydrogel Lenses Tested

Alcon, a global eye care products manufacturer, has announced that it is currently developing a new contact lenses wetting solution.

According to Dr Ketelson, who participates in the research project, lens performance depends on many factors, but there is a tendency to view the main two, lens material technology and lens solution technology, as unrelated. His project, he insists, concentrates on combining these technologies in order to provide patients with comfort for long periods of time.

During a presentation, Alcon’s global director for contact lens care marketing, Glenn Moro, observed that in spite of all the technological progress, the patient dropout rate has not changed significantly in the past 15-20 years. In his opinion, this proves that the current approach is not the most effective one and that the desired results can only be achieved if the two elements are combined.

Dr Ketelson’s project focuses on developing block polymers that will penetrate and target hydrophobic places in silicone hydrogel materials, leading to improved lenses’ wetting performance and tear film stability.
