Though silicone hydrogel and hydrogel contact lenses seem to have taken over the contact lens market, rigid, gas permeable lenses are still irreplaceable in the treatment of a number of ophthalmic conditions. Consequently, numerous manufacturers continue producing such lenses and developing new ones, perfecting their designs basic characteristic.
The US Food and Drug Administration, according to an announcement made by Menicon Co. Ltd, has just given Lagado Corporation’s Tyro (or hofocon A) and Onsi (onsifocon A) GP contact lens materials wider indication with respect to the treatment of conditions resulting from irregularity of the cornea (keratoconus, pellucid marginal degeneration, post penetrating keratoplasty, post radial keratotomy as well as post LASIK surgery).
Onsi’s excellent characteristics (high oxygen delivery, exceptionally hydrophilic surfaces) allowed it to be used in patients with different vision problems (short- and long-sightedness, astigmatism, presbyopia).
Tyro, the company states, can now be used in individuals who require lenses with even higher oxygen delivery. The material, available in standard and large diameters, is used by manufacturers producing custom contact lenses.
