In a recent article published in Contact Lenses Today, Ronald K. Watanabe, OD, FAAO, writes about treatment options for patients with irregular corneas. In his opinion, though GP lenses have a number of benefits and effectively correct visual problems associated with such corneas, some individuals have difficulty in getting accustomed to GP lenses.
Watanabe lists other possibilities that such patients have – scleral and hybrid contact lenses as well as piggyback systems and lenses designed especially for them. According to the expert, those therapeutic options have been successfully used by many patients, who were satisfied with the comfort and convenience they offer.
Another option mentioned by Watanabe is KeraSoft, a silicone hydrogel lens produced by UltraVision CLPL and marketed (under an agreement signed in January) by Bausch and Lomb. KeraSoft lenses are designed with the use of corneal topography and can be customised with respect numerous parameters. The lens is to become available globally later this year.
