Volunteers Needed for New Presbyopia Study

Orthokeratology, which consists in using special contact lenses overnight to change the shape of the cornea, has been used to treat various vision problems (particularly myopia). Now this method is going to be evaluated by researchers from New South Wales School of Optometry and Vision Science with respect to presbyopia (loss of visual acuity connected with ageing, mostly resulting from decreased elasticity of the crystalline lens).

In order to conduct the study, the scientists need to find 20 individuals willing to take part in it. The prospective subjects have to be between 45 and 65 years old.

Dr Paul Gifford, who is one of the experts involved in the study, stated that the orthokeratology (or ortho-K) lenses should allow their presbyopic users to be able to read without the help of glasses or contact lenses all day long.

Recently, Dr Gifford has developed a new type of ortho-K lens, proving that such lenses could be effective in correcting low levels of hyperopia.
