It has been announced that Bausch + Lomb is carrying a voluntary recall of Soothe Xtra Protection eye drops whose expiration dates are between February 2011 and August 2012. The eye drops are only sold in the United States.
The reason for the recall is the fact that some lots of Soothe Xtra Protection eye drops were found to be out of specification with respect to the effectiveness of their preservatives. However, the company claims that there have been no reports of adverse events caused by this problem and the recall was undertaken in the interest of patient safety.
Products which are outside specification close to their expiration date may not be protected against contamination enough and might potentially cause eye burning, stinging or general eye discomfort. All contact lens users with these symptoms need to be examined by an ophthalmologist.
Bausch + Lomb is investigating the issue, which affects only Soothe Xtra Protection (XP) eye drops, to establish its cause.
