The debate on whether children should wear contact lenses or not continues. Most experts agree that children could greatly benefit from wearing them instead of glasses, not only with respect to their vision, but also psychological aspects, such as self-confidence and self-esteem. The minimum age at which children should start wearing contact lenses remains the most controversial issue.
An eye care specialist from Mayo Clinic, Dr Amir Khan, has recently added his view to the discussion. In his opinion, there is no such age, as it all depends on each child’s maturity. Consequently, some children may be ready quite early whereas others need much more time to learn the appropriate skills.
Among the things that children need to get to know how to do, Dr Khan listed inserting and removing contact lenses (which requires patience and caution) as well as keeping them clean. Pointing out that it is not as easy as it might seem, Dr Khan stated that even some adults have problems taking care of their lenses.
Finally, Dr Khan stressed the importance of seeking advice from a professional, as it is vital that children wearing contact lenses have constant supervision and frequent eye exams.
