ISV-101 is the code name of a new drug for dry eye that is being developed by InSite Vision Incorporated. The company has just filed an Investigational New Drug (IND) application with the US Food and Drug Administration. The new drug contains a small dose of Bromfenac, which is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent and uses the company’s patented technology called DuraSite.
Phase 1/2 clinical trials are planned to begin in 2011. They will be conducted in a way that will enable InSite Vision’s researchers to compare the effectiveness of different doses of Bromfenac and find out how the DuraSite technology affects it. As a result the trials, the research team will know high the ideal dose is and how to design the next phase of the clinical trials.
InSite Vision believes that the DuraSite technology increases the strength of eye medicines, because it prolongs the period in which they are present on the surface of the eye. Initial data suggest that high doses of Bromfenac in combination with DuraSite are safe and effective.
This is very good news to many contact lens users dealing with the problem, which is the reason why some of them decide to give up wearing contact lenses altogether.
