Following the recent surge in the popularity of fashion contact lenses (particularly in connection with Halloween parties and other special occasions), the US Food and Drug Administration decided to issue a report warning about using nonprescription contact lenses.
First of all, the FDA stated that buying nonprescription coloured contact lenses is altogether wrong, as all lenses require proper fitting by a specialist. Otherwise, they may seriously damage the eye and that is why parents are urged to consider whether they want their children to wear uncorrected lenses at all.
In spite of the recent changes in the law connected with contact lenses, there are still many injuries caused by lenses bought at places such as beauty salons or on the Internet, and the FDA reminds consumers that visiting an ophthalmologist (to obtain a prescription) and purchasing lenses from a licensed optician is a safe and easy way to protect oneself against severe complications. The lenses, the FDA report adds, should then be taken care of just like corrective contact lenses.
