Natalie Portman Used Contact Lenses to Improve Her Performance

The new Darren Aronofsky film, Black Swan, has been a major success, both financial and critical. Reviewers praise the film’s script, direction and performances, especially Natalie Portman’s.

In Black Swan, the actress plays a ballet dancer who has been entrusted with the two main roles in Swan Lake, but has problems dealing with the pressure that is associated with it.

In order to transform herself for the purposes of the part, Portman wore custom made coloured contact lenses. These were created by Kevin Carter, who specialises in theatrical contact lenses. Carter revealed that the lenses worn by Portman were regular daily contacts, which he painted with the use of a tiny paintbrush.

Natalie Portman’s performance has already been called one of the best in 2010 and she has received several award nominations, including a Golden Globe nomination in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama category. Industry experts believe she will also receive an Oscar nomination.
