While 3D films and shows, thanks to new TV sets, cinema screens and Blu-ray players, are becoming more and more popular, contact lenses able to project 3D images still sound like science fiction. However, researchers have made huge progress lately and are confident we will soon be able to use the results of their work.
After Sensimed introduced smart contact lenses that monitor intraocular pressure in order to improve the treatment of glaucoma, it became clear that it is possible to combine contact lenses with electronics successfully.
Babak Parviz, who is conducting the research project at the University of Washington, states that, apart from providing 3D images, the contact lenses of the future will be able to monitor a person’s health and warn him or her when certain parameters are outside the normal range.
So far, the team has come up with lenses including red and blue LEDs, and lenses with 3D optics similar to the head-up visors used to watch films.
