Crystalens® iClear is a new iPhone application released by Bausch + Lomb, one of the leading producers of contact lenses and other medical products, whose purpose is to educate and entertain customers with respect to cataracts, B+L’s Crystalens intraocular lenses (the only accommodating intraocular lenses approved by the FDA) and vision in general.
The application gives its users a lot of information about cataracts and allows them to check their visual acuity and colour vision. In addition, Crystalens® iClear includes a feature called “Doc finder”, which helps patients to find a Crystalens surgeon.
In an effort to educate the public about the importance of appropriate vision correction (research shows that only a small number of people are aware that there are differences between intraocular lenses), Bausch + Lomb also launched a national advertising campaign featuring actress Florence Henderson.
Because Western societies are growing old, there is a rising demand for services associated with vision correction, including the implantation of intraocular lenses. For instance, every year, 3 million cataract surgeries are conducted in the US alone and the number is expected to increase steadily in the following years.
