According to the latest market report prepared by iData Research, after the crisis year 2009, when the sales of contact lenses and other eye care products declined, the sales started to rise again in 2010.
The report suggests that the sales of ophthalmic products increased in 2010 mainly due to the growing popularity of contact lenses and optical coherence tomography (OCT, a diagnostic tool that allows ophthalmologists to examine the eye in great detail and diagnose numerous serious conditions). The report states that the US contact lens market will exceed $4.6 billion because of a growing demand for contact lenses, especially daily contact lenses, among the members of the baby-boomer generation.
As far as contact lens manufacturers are concerned, the report lists Johnson & Johnson (the producer of ACUVUE® Brand contact lenses), CIBA Vision (AIR OPTIX®, DAILIES® and Fresh®Look Color Studio lenses) and CooperVision (Proclear®, Crazy®, Frequency® and others) as the market’s leaders in 2010.
