It is widely acknowledged that proper care of contact lenses is the most important factor affecting the safety of contact lens wear. Without maintaining appropriate hygiene, which involves cleaning lenses regularly with the use of recommended solutions, there is a serious risk of eye irritation or even a severe ocular infection.
Recently, there has been a discussion concerning the best way of cleaning contact lenses. As a result, Bausch + Lomb, a manufacturer of contact lenses and lens care solutions, decided to change the instructions provided on the labels of the company’s products. Instead of the ‘no rub’ phrase, the labels now include a recommendation to ‘rub and rinse’ lenses, which is considered to be a more effective method of cleaning them and ensuring there are no harmful deposits on their surfaces.
The company started to change labels at the beginning of 2010. Biotrue and Renu Sensitive, multi-purposes solutions, already have the new instructions. The change should be completed by May 2011, when B+L plans to include the new recommendations with respect to its Renu Fresh brand in the US.
