Abbott’s New Multi-Purpose Solution Approved

The US Food and Drug Administration has just approved RevitaLens Ocutec, a multi-purpose disinfecting solution (MPDS) for marketing in the United States. The solution was designed for use with both silicone hydrogel and conventional soft contact lenses, and was developed in collaboration with over 600 eye care professionals specialising in silicone hydrogel, microbiology and chemistry.

Abbot states that its newest product is characterised by high effectiveness in killing microorganisms. It also clears the lens surface of proteins, kills Acanthamoeba and Fusarium, decreases the probability of corneal staining and the risk of other eye complications.

According to Abbot Medical Optics’s senior vice president, Jim Mazzo, RevitaLens Ocutec sets a new standard in terms of patient safety with respect to contact lens use. If proper lens care is maintained, Mazzo adds, which involves rubbing and rinsing lenses, the solution will provide patients with comfort and satisfaction irrespective of what kind of contact lenses they use.

RevitaLens Ocutec’s US sales are to start by the end of October.
