Expert: Contact Lenses Need to Be Stored Extremely Carefully

2 weekly and monthly contact lenses need to be kept in strictly specified conditions in order to reduce the risk of serious complications to a minimum, Richard Pakey, an expert in the field warns. He points to the fact that many contact lens users do not adhere to the recommendations issued by contact lens manufacturers, exposing themselves, for instance, to a parasite called acanthamoeba.

This protozoan is able to burrow into the eye, leading to acanthamoeba keratitis, a severe, potentially blinding disease. Since the parasite lives in water and most contact lens wearers keep their contacts in the bathroom, where they may easily come into contact with water, it is of utmost importance to make sure they sterile at all times, using appropriate storage methods and contact lens solutions.

Another way of protecting oneself against the acanthamoeba is to switch to http://www.optykrozmus.co.uk/contact-lens-types/daily-contact-lenses/, which do not require any care and can be replaced whenever their user has doubts about their sterility (e.g. after a swim).
