It appears that a major change has occurred in the way children’s eye problems are treated. According to a new study, instead of fitting youngsters with glasses, optometrists tend to recommend contact lenses.
The study, in which 576 US optometrists participated, was carried out by the new American Optometric Association (AOA). It found that optometrists are changing the way they correct children’s vision problems. The shift is gradual, but clearly visible, as 21% of the participants of the study stated that they prescribed contact lenses to 10-12-year-old patients more often than a year before.
In the opinion of Dr Christine Sindt, who supervises the AOA’s contact lens and cornea section, it shows that children in need of vision correction do not find it particularly difficult to use and take care of contact lenses. Of Course, Dr Sindt adds, optometrists always evaluate how mature the child is and whether he or she has enough support at home to be able to wear contact lenses.
In addition, optometrists seem to believe that, among younger children, girls are better suited to use contact lenses.
