Contact Lens Cases an Important Element of Contact Lens Safety

When it comes to discussing contact lenses safety, cases are often omitted, as the authors of articles tend to focus on contact lens solutions, materials and modalities. Because of that, B.J. Hall and L. Jones decided to conduct a study regarding contact lens case contamination.

The study consisted in a literature review concerning such factors connected with contact lens contamination as major pathogens involved, bacterial biofilm and ways of avoiding contamination.

The conclusion reached by the researchers was that contact lens case contamination is an extremely serious issue, which may result in the development of microbial keratitis in contact lens users.

Among the methods that should be used to prevent it, Hall and Jones list using antimicrobial cases, cleaning and replacing cases on a regular basis, avoiding topping up solutions, and not using tap water to wash cases. In addition, the authors point out, patients should be careful about how they store their cases when they are wearing their contact lenses.
