Many contact lenses and glasses users decide to undergo a laser surgery to correct their vision problems permanently, and the popularity of LASIK procedures is constantly increasing. However, the safety of the procedure has recently been questioned by Morris Waxler, a former US Food and Drug Administration regulator.
In Waxler’s opinion, patients’ belief that after a LASIK operation they will be free of vision problems is “a mirage.” He insists that LASIK’s success rate is as low as 50% and its positive effects are short-lived. In addition, he stated that patients are not properly informed of the risks associated with the procedure, which include pain, redness and some vision disturbances, not to mention the fact that – after the surgery – patients often have to wear glasses or contact lenses anyway.
With respect to these issues, Waxler wants the FDA to issue a public health advisory about LASIK in order to inform all those who are potentially interested in the procedure of the risks connected with it.
