Even though many technologically advanced contact lenses especially designed for patients with presbyopia have been available for a considerable period of time, the percentage of population wearing contact lenses drops sharply after the age of 40. In fact, less than 20% of American presbyopes wear contact lenses.
That said, the number of users of multifocal contact lenses has been rising. A recent study discovered that the worldwide average age of contact lens wearers has increased considerably in the last 10 years. US marketing data also suggest a significant rise (as high as 14%) in the number of presbyopic lens fittings over the last year.
This positive trend results from a growing demand (directly connected with better contact lens designs), more experienced eye care practitioners, who fit older patients with contact lenses, and new options available to patients (such as Focus Dailies Progressives Contact lenses or Air Optix Aqua Multifocal Contact Lenses). As the technological progress in the area of contact lens design is exceptionally fast and the number of presbyopic patients wearing contact lenses still relatively low, the trend is very likely to continue in the following years.
