Following one of the most influential trends in product development – using solutions found in nature – Bausch & Lomb has introduced a new contact lens cleaner, called Biotrue.
The new cleaner has, its manufacturer claims, the same pH as the lubricant found in the human eye (7.5). This is achieved due to the use of hyaluronan, a substance which was first developed for eye surgery. According to Bausch & Lomb, no other contact lens solution currently available on the market contains hyaluronan. In addition, the cleaner is said to keep certain tear proteins active, which has a beneficial effect on the health of the eye.
In order to make Biotrue more appealing to the so-called Lohas consumers (lifestyles of health and sustainability – a term referring to consumers who take environmental issues into account when purchasing products), the company provides the solution in recyclable boxes and bottles.
Bausch & Lomb is one of the biggest contact lens solutions manufacturers with a market share of 16.9% and sales of $163.3 million a year.
